In a spring time years ago I was invited to Groton, CT to tell stories to the kids of active Navy troops soon to return later that afternoon to their home submarine base. The kids had fun with the stories and so did I.
I was invited to stick around to witness the sub come into port. These sailors had been out to sea for 11 months. They lined up, and were released.
As sweethearts and wives hugged their husbands newspaper camera men shoved lenses in their faces. I, for my part, had to look away. It was such a private moment taking place in public, that I could not bear to watch. Let them have their moment of joyous reunion in each other’s arms.
I wish them well, and wish an end to war.
